Fundamental physics, astrophysics and cosmology with gravitational waves

The second generation of gravitational waves detectors is being installed and it is scheduled to be operative within 2014-2015. Thanks to their sensitivity, the instruments are expected to deliver a number of detections, effectively inaugurating the era of gravitational waves astronomy. The scientific goals that are driving the efforts towards detecting gravitational waves are many and they range from fundamental physics to cosmology.

In this talk, I will briefly review second- and third-generation observatories and the astrophysical sources that these instruments will likely observe. I will then give an overview of the science that will likely be achieved observing gravitational waves, with a particular attention to the determination of cosmological parameters and to the tests of general relativity that, for the first time, gravitational waves will allow.
