On higher-spin and higher-derivative theories
Abstract: 

I discuss some issues on higher-spin (HS) and higher-derivative (HD) theories. I first show how the HS generalization of the induced gravity à la Sakarov fails to give a lower-derivative HS action, while generating infinitely many HD gauge invariants, including the conformal HS action. After discussing analogies of the latter action to its lower-spin counterpart---conformal gravity---I introduce a class of HD HS actions, which interpolates the two-derivative massless action and the conformal one. Finally, I comment a possible relevance of these HD theories to the HS generalization of New Massive Gravity, for which I present a new derivation via a dimensional reduction from a d+1 dimensional massless theory.
