Effective theories of transport in holographic systems with momentum dissipation

Gauge/gravity duality can be used to study the transport properties of strongly interacting systems with no quasiparticles. I will give an overview of some holographic toy models of states like this, in which momentum is not conserved and thus the transport of energy and charge is non-trivial. I will describe in detail how the transport properties of the most basic such example can be understood in terms of two simple, non-holographic effective theories, one of which is valid when momentum dissipates slowly, and one when it dissipates quickly.
